Red, White & Blue White Wine Spritzer (with Strawberries & Blueberries)

I love scrolling through pictures of Red, White & Blue themed food & crafts from folks celebrating patriotic summer holidays. The punchy, deeply-saturated colors are total eye-candy for me!

However, many of the food-related recipes rely heavily on artificial food dyes to achieve those bold colors, which is something I try to avoid.

So, I thought I'd come up with my own contribution using foods & drinks that contain those colors naturally.

Easy White Wine Spritzer Recipe with Summer Fruits

Since I'm a huge fan of spritzers and sangria made with dry white wine, I decided to pivot and create a sweeter white wine drink made with riesling (a lovely German wine that goes down really easily) and two kinds of summer berries: strawberries and blueberries.

You might be wondering why I made this in individual glasses instead of a pitcher. I almost always buy organic strawberries & blueberries because they're typically high on the Dirty Dozen list (meaning they contain a lot pesticide residue).

Since the organic versions cost quite a bit more, I don't like pouring all the berries into a pitcher of wine just for looks. It's not like sangria which requires you to soak sliced fruit in wine for several hours to infuse it with flavor.

With berry spritzers, I much prefer putting a smaller amount of the fruit into each glass, refilling it as needed with wine + carbonated beverage, and saving any leftovers for other recipes.

USING UP LEFTOVER FRUIT

So, if you're like me and plan to have some leftover fruit, use it in recipes like easy chocolate covered strawberriesstrawberry salad, strawberry shortcake milkshakeswatermelon saladstrawberry banana muffins, and blueberry sour cream muffins.

If you don't mind turning on your oven, use the blueberries and/or strawberries to fix this triple berry slab pie, these strawberry blueberry muffins, these blueberry hand pies, this blueberry bread, or this triple berry crisp!

You could also save some of the blueberries to make blueberry infused vodka (which takes two weeks to soak) and then use that in your next batch of spritzers or even a berry sangria.

Craving something cold and sweet? Fix this simple blueberry ice cream or for something a little healthier blend up an acai bowl or this 4 ingredient strawberry sorbet! How about sweet & savory? Try this easy blueberry chutney next.

I've also included a mocktail version of this drink in the recipe notes so everyone can join in on the fun (kids, teens & adults who don't imbibe).

TIP: If you want to learn more about wine spritzers, hop over to my citrus white wine spritzers recipe, which explains all about them in more detail (i.e. how to make them, best types of wines to use, the best carbonated beverages to use, etc.).

An easy & gorgeous spritzer recipe featuring fresh strawberries & blueberries + white wine for a patriotic "Red, White & Blue" theme without any food dyes. Fix this semi-sweet & bubbly cocktail all summer long when you need a refreshing drink. It's also an excellent way to celebrate holidays like Memorial Day & Fourth of July.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Measure the blueberries & strawberries into a wine glass or clear drinking vessel (you want to be able to see all the colors).
  2. Pour the chilled wine over the top, add in the blueberry infused vodka (optional), and top with a few splashes of a carbonated beverage (sparkling water, lemon-lime soda, or tonic water) to make the drink fizzy.
  3. Serve immediately while cold, adding ice if necessary (I prefer not to because it waters down the drink).

Notes:

WINE: Since we're not letting the berries infuse in the wine over several hours (like you do with sangria), make sure to choose a medium-sweet wine instead of dry. My favorite is Riesling, which is a German wine. If you want to use a dry wine, make sure to top each drink with a sweet & bubbly drink like lemon-lime soda or tonic water to balance things out. CARBONATED ELEMENT: If you're using plain sparkling water (like La Croix or San Pellegrino), only use a few splashes for each drink, otherwise, it will dilute the sweetness of the wine. If you prefer a fizzier spritzer, use lemon-lime soda or tonic water which has sugar added to keep things balanced. FRESH VS. FROZEN: If you want to keep the wine clear for a "red white & blue" theme, use fresh room-temperature fruit. If you don't care about that, frozen is fine but as the fruit thaws it will bleed its color into the wine. MOCKTAIL VERSION: If you're serving this to kiddos or adults who don't drink alcohol, substitute a sparkling juice blend like apple & white grape instead of wine.
