Learn how to make an easy essential oil diffuser bracelet using inexpensive non-toxic materials like citrine stone, porous lava rock, and hemp cord. Decorate the bracelet with your favorite accent beads (I prefer wood) to make it look unique while you enjoy the aromatherapy benefits. This makes a great DIY gift for both gals and guys and is a simple enough craft project for kids to help out.
I'm also semi-obsessed with citrine stones right now, so I wanted to create a DIY diffuser bracelet with that as the centerpiece. Why? Citrine is a yellow and white stone that is good for drawing abundance, success, and positive energy.
I've been wearing a wire-wrapped citrine necklace along with a turquoise stone ring on almost a daily basis for the past few years. This combo has a calming, grounding + good vibes effect! Plus, they're both gorgeous.
How Do Essential Oil Diffuser Bracelets Work?
When you place a drop of essential oil on an absorbent material (typically lava rock, leather, faux leather, clay, or felt for diffuser jewelry), it soaks up the oil and holds onto the scent until it evaporates and the smell is gone. Depending on the particular essential oil, the smell will last as little as several hours and up to a day or two.
Why Use An Essential Oil Diffuser Bracelet?
Wearing a diffuser bracelet makes it easy to enjoy the aromatherapy benefits of essential oils all day long, especially when you're away from home or on the go. Simply take a few sniffs and the smell will affect your brain in seconds. And each person can pick and choose their favorite scents based on their needs in the moment.
You might be wondering: What kind of aromatherapy benefits? Things like an improved mood, less stress, better focus, and relaxation (in seconds)...just to name a few. Aren't essential oils amazing? (I'm obsessed.)
How to Use An Essential Oil Diffuser Bracelet
Set the diffuser bracelet on a paper towel, clean cloth towel, or plate. Place a drop of your favorite essential oil on one or two of the lava rock beads. Make sure it's the side that's facing outward (away from your skin). Let that soak in for a minute and wipe off any excess that drips down.
Put the diffuser bracelet on your wrist and sniff from the bracelet on and off over the next few hours to reap the aromatherapy benefits. (You can smell it without sticking it right by your nose, but it'll be more subtle further away.)
Essential Oil Recommendations For Diffuser Jewelry
The type of essential oil (single or blend) I use at any given time will depend on my goal in that moment. Am I feeling stressed and need to relax? Do I feel tired and need a pick-me-up? Am I feeling grumpy and need to brighten my mood? Maybe I'm busy with a deadline and need help focusing. So many options (and emotions).
Here are a few of my favorite essential oils (Young Living is the only brand I use) to smell for different purposes:
- Vetiver: grounding and relaxing (I like to use it in the evening to help shut off my brain)
- Grapefruit: for overwhelming moments and brightening my mood
- Stress Away: self-explanatory (Calgon Take Me Away!), also when I want to smell like lime + vanilla
- Idaho Blue Spruce: A single oil with one of the highest frequencies (higher even than rose) - it's excellent for promoting happy feelings and smells lovely (I wear it as a perfume)
- Valor: for courage (excellent for any type of public speaking) - it also smells ahhh-mazing
- Peppermint: excellent for promoting alertness (sniff it before exercising or taking a test) and making you feel great after a big comfort food meal
- Lime + Peppermint: Mojito anyone? This one makes me feel energetic & happy
- Lemon Myrtle or Lemongrass: I use both of these for energy & motivation (they're good for procrastination)
- Joy: this is my go-to happy oil (I looooove the smell)
- Eucalyptus: It smells super refreshing and cleansing - Good for when you're stuck inside all day and want a fresh smell! I especially love it when I'm at a high altitude.
- Rosemary: I sniff this, along with peppermint & lemon (or grapefruit) when I'm working on a big project and need help focusing.
- Patchouli: When I want to smell like a hippy. JUST KIDDING! It's actually amazing to sniff on when you're feeling PMS-y before your period. It makes me feel less grumpy in seconds!

DIY Lava Rock Essential Oil Diffuser Bracelet
Learn how to make an easy essential oil diffuser bracelet using inexpensive non-toxic materials like citrine stone, porous lava rock, and hemp cord. Decorate the bracelet with your favorite accent beads (I prefer wood) to make it look unique while you enjoy the aromatherapy benefits. This makes a great DIY gift for both gals and guys and is a simple enough craft project for kids to help out.
Supplies
If you're the crafty type, you may have some or all of these items on hand already, which will cut down on the cost. I grabbed all my materials locally because I wanted to make them the same day instead of waiting for online shipping. Feel free to improvise with different colored beads or accent materials or grab what you need to make it look like mine by ordering everything online or visiting your local craft or beads store.
- lava rock beads (these lava beads are popular on Amazon)
- citrine stone beads (such as these loose citrine beads or these smooth citrine nuggets)
- ebony, yellow & brown wooden beads (for accent)
- hemp cord or elastic cord (I used 20 lb hemp cord because I prefer the extra thickness, but if your accent beads have tiny holes you may need 10 lb hemp cord instead)
- essential oils (I only use THESE essential oils)
Note: I used fewer beads so they only cover the top & sides of the wrist, but you can add more of any of the beads to completely cover the cord, which you'll likely want if you're using an elastic cord instead of hemp.
Also, feel free to swap out whatever stones or beads you want (the lava rock is the only required bead since it's porous for the essential oils). I think turquoise stone beads or unpolished amethyst stone beads would look great!
Instructions
- Cut a length of cord (hemp or elastic) at least 31 inches long to give you plenty of room for the beads and tying knots.
- Place both ends of the cord together and center them so both sides are of equal length. Slide the citrine bead (or main accent bead) on the cord first, followed by a lava rock bead on each side.
- Slide an equal amount of accent beads (I used wooden ones) onto both sides of the lava beads until you've covered your desired amount of cord (no more than the circumference of your wrist).
- Line up both ends of the cord again so they're even and adjust the beads so they're centered.
- Tie 1-3 knots on the outside of each ending bead so they stay put and don't fall off.
- From here you should have several inches of cord left on each side and can tie your bracelet however you want.
- Tying Options: If you're using an elastic cord, you can tie the ends into a single knot to fit the size of your wrist and then slip it on and off as you wish. If you're using hemp cord, you can tie the ends into a single or double slipknot (that is adjustable so you can take it on or off) OR you can tie a bead on one side and a loop just big enough to slide over the bead on the opposite side (this is what I did).
- Apply your favorite essential oil to the lava bead (see "How to Use An Essential Oil Diffuser Bracelet" paragraph above for more specific directions).
